ALL SESSIONS TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY MORNINGS

This is our most popular complete beginners sewing course. You will learn how to sew from scratch and quickly progress to a more accomplished level of sewing and making your own simple garments. In this course you will develop a sound set of sewing machine skills and knowledge of fabrics. This beginners sewing course will give you the confidence to use a sewing machine on your own and teach you to attempt more ambitious sewing projects, clothes making and alterations.

Course Schedule

This beginners sewing course is usually made up of 4 x 90 min sessions run over 4 consecutive weeks.

Session 1 - The Basics

During the first 90 min session you will be introduced to your sewing machine and taught basic skills in order to build confidence. This includes: winding a bobbin, threading the machine, changing a needle, sewing straight lines, curves and corners, finishing seams and reverse stitching. We will then put the things you’ve learnt to use.

Session 2 - Using a Pattern

In the second session you'll progress and learn how to use a pattern, modifying it to fit your body measurements. You will lay, mark and pin the pattern to the fabric and cut it out. You will learn what all the symbols mean. Handle the tools, learn the methods and practice the terminology of flat pattern cutting. You will be shown how to take your own measurements and cut your own pattern for making a garment from our course selection.

Session 3 - Construct Your Garment

In the third session of the course you will learn a series of techniques including hemming & using different sewing machine feet. You will start putting your sweatshirt, which will be ready for fitting by the end of the class.

Session 4 - Finish Your Garment (sweatshirt)

During the last session you will put all your learnt skills into place. You will construct your final garment, and complete your project walking away with a new, perfectly fitted sweatshirt/jumper made by you.

Just to sew things up...

All machines, and equipment are provided, although if you would like to bring your own sewing machine to learn on, you are welcome to. You’ll also leave this course with materials to help on your sewing journey ahead!
