BEGINNERS: COMPLETE FASHION DESIGN (4 week course)
Ardelle Academy offers 1-1 private sessions in our London studio. Sessions are taught and done along side creative director Ardelle Fawehinmi. If you've never touched a sewing machine before, and have a desire to learn the fashion design process from the very beginning, then this is course for you.

ALL SESSIONS TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY MORNINGS
This is our most popular complete beginners fashion design course. You will learn how to research, design, and sew from scratch. Quickly progressing to a more accomplished level of sewing and making your own simple garment. In this course you will develop a sound set of sewing machine skills and knowledge of fabrics, design and drawing techniques. This beginners fashion design course will give you the confidence to design and sew on your own and teach you to attempt more ambitious sewing projects, clothes making and design ideas.
Course Schedule
This beginners fashion design course is usually made up of 5 x 90 min sessions run over 5 consecutive weeks.
Session 1 - Machine Basics
During the first 90 min session you will be introduced to your sewing machine and taught basic skills in order to build confidence. This includes: winding a bobbin, threading the machine, changing a needle, sewing straight lines, curves and corners, finishing seams and reverse stitching. We will then put the things you’ve learnt to use. For your first basics project you will have the chance to start working on a zippered bag.
Session 2 - Fashion Drawing & Research
In the second session you'll learn how to draw the body in proportion, create fashion figure templates and develop a set of fashion figure poses. It also covers how to draw faces, hair, and garment details such as pleats, gathers, frills and fold. You can round off the session by producing a simple illustration of your own. We will then start thinking about things that inspire you, and progress to our research portion of the course.
Homework Task - Designing Your Mock Collection
You will first choose a topic as a source of inspiration and a target customer to design for. Using a range of visual imagery to inspire you will develop your design ideas through sketching and drawing to create a range of fashion outfits. Then, you will draw out the range as a line- up of your designs with colour and fabric suggestions.
Session 3 - Creating Your Fashion Garment
During the second to last session you will put all your learnt skills into place. You will then select one garment from your collection line up from your homework task, and we will start marking out how to construct the garment. You will cut and start constructing your final garment.
Session 4 - Completing Your Garment
On your last session you will complete your project walking away with a new, perfectly fitted garment made and designed by you.
Just to sew things up...
All machines, and equipment are provided, although if you would like to bring your own sewing machine to learn on, you are welcome to.
For this course you will need to bring a sketch book and pencil set. and for your final garment, fabric that we will discuss during week two.
You’ll also leave this course with materials to help on your sewing journey ahead!
